Who is Mary Jones?
I have a better nurse for 56 years I have taught nursing school at Baptist hospital in Memphis TN, taught in the LPN program as well as developed and taught surgical technologist program.. the area I enjoyed most was surgery where I spent over 50 years.
During this time I worked with the world famous heart doctor, Dr DeBakey in Houston Tx where I assisted with surgery on the Duke of Windsor from England. In the late 1960 the Vietnam war was a need for experienced nurses. I am very patriotic so I decided to join the USAF as a nurse with the rank of Captain since I had a BSN and 9 years of surgery experience.
Shorty after I was in there was a call for experienced nurse to the front line. I prayed about it and felt God's leadership to volunteer. I knew He could take care of me wherever He sent me. I felt I had good skills to help those injured in the field to come back from loss of limbs that could be fitted with prosthetics.

Working in Yellowstone park hospital one supper showed me some different type of injuries that are normally seen in routine hospitals like scalping by bear, or gorge from buffalo just to name a few. Being from Louisiana gave many opportunities to help with hurricane victims so I became A RedCross disaster nurse.
Woodworking has been a most enjoyable adventure so in the height of the oil industry I decided to go back to school to become a safety engineer on the oil rigs but during my senior the oil industry had great difficulty so I went back to surgery.

When habitat for humanity came along the American Operating Room Nurses built two houses while we attended our national convention in New Orleans. Back home our hospital built a home that the hospital paid our salary when we went to work. Fantastic. The Singles Ministry at First Baptist Church sponsored about six mission trips to go build, add on, renovate churches in the northern states and in Canada. All of us paid about half or more to do this. The Lord was in it all the way. When we got home one year my house insurance was due and upon inspection I was told I had to have a new roof. Money was tight and the temperature was hot but my single friends said that they would help and eleven of us put the roof on in temperatures above 100F.

I have been blessed.

I have had 3 blood clots in my lung. One was large and I was in ICU FOR THREE MONTHS. This took a toll on my marriage and divorce soon followed. While in ICU some times on deaths door, I had a lot of time to think about life and it's value. We all act like we are going to live for years so we are surprised when life is cut short. LIFE IS FRAGILE.

The years were kinder to me as I got older but I always stretched myself to be ALL I COULD and God gave me the desire of my heart. I was an avid follower of ice skating so when the Olympics announced it would be in Salt Lake City 2002 i started the long detailed process of getting to be a volunteer. Yes we had to buy tickets 2 years before in case I didn't get chosen. My sister was going with me. We were to be notified by Oct 2001. Oct came and went still no word so I called them and they said they were sorry but I had returned all my paper work on time. I knew that was a lie as I faxed in all my forms. Then being the redhead that I am I had a strong determination to tell them that I loved my country, joined USAF when I would never have had to go then volunteering to go to the front line for our troops was not enough love for my country then I felt sorry for us. They said that they would see what they could and get back to me. In 2 days I got the call. I WOULD BE A NURSE WITH THE FIGURE SKATER.

The intimate assignment. We were told that there were over 15,000 nurses applied and less than 300 chosen.

In 2003 my mother died and I retired to Cameron La where hurricane Rite hit in 2005 and took EVERYTHING I OWNED.

I realized how valuable life is. We all have 24 hours in each day. How will you spend it? When I was 15 I learned this little poem that goes like this.....I shall pass this way but once, any good thing therefore that I can do let me do it now , let me not defer it nor neglect it, FOR I SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN. God gave me this verse from the Bible that has given me direction for my life and great courage for whatever comes my way. "I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Jer29:11. Thank you for asking. You probably got more than you bargained for. But God brought you into my life and I am grateful. My desire is Q96 and the prime core as I have ac stent in the main coronary artery.

Mary Jones your Bridge of Hope Ambassador
